The Fostering Network has recently announced that the Government has reconsidered proposals which would have penalised Foster Carers who claim housing benefit.
Currently Social Housing residents, or those living in private rented accommodation funded through housing benefit, with a spare bedroom lose a portion of their housing benefit for each ‘unused’ bedroom in their property. This would be devastating for Foster Carers, as Fostered children’s bedrooms are considered to be ‘spare’ rooms under this recent legislation.
Under the new proposals however, Foster Carers will now be allowed an additional room, without it affecting their benefit as long as they have Fostered a child or become an approved Foster Carer within the last 12 months.
This is fantastic news for current Foster Carers and many more prospective Carers – opening up the possibility to Foster to 1000s of families across the UK.
