Foster Carers Training Modules
The following are examples of the training courses a carer will be expected to attend during their fostering career which we see as a profession.
YEAR ONE
- Induction/assessment group and Skills to Foster course
- A Foundation for Re-parenting
- Child Protection
- Health and Safety in the Foster Home
- First Aid
- Sexual Abuse Awareness
- Report Writing for Foster Carers
- Children’s Rights including complaints, legal matters, court craft plus the roles and functions of other professionals and agencies
- Behaviour Management and Restraint Training
YEAR TWO
- Addictive Behaviour including drug abuse, alcohol abuse, smoking
- Valuing Diversity and Promoting Equality including anti-discriminatory practice, equal opportunities, heritage
- Child development including understanding behaviour, behaviour management and communicating with children and young people
- Direct work techniques such as play, use of materials, communication skills
- Preparation for independence
- Promoting and supporting contact for young people – the foster carer’s role
- Child Protection refresher
- NVQ 3 – caring for children and young people
YEAR THREE
- The NVQ Level 3 is available and thereafter a carer can apply for the Foundation Degree in Foster Care (Next Step was instrumental in the creation of this latter qualification)
